NHL Eyeing Austin for a New Franchise
Austin is officially in the running for a National Hockey League franchise, alongside Houston. Pursuit Sports, the group working with the Friedkin family on the expansion effort, has already started conversations with local officials, and a decision on which city gets the team is expected within the next six months.
Why should Austin homeowners and buyers care about a hockey team? Because major sports franchises tend to reshape the neighborhoods around them. New arenas typically bring new hotels, restaurants, retail, and Class A office space with them, which can shift Austin real estate values in surrounding areas over time. Highland Mall's Transformation Wins a National Award
The old Highland Mall, once a 700,000-square-foot vacant shell near I-35 and US-290, has officially been recognized as one of the best redevelopment projects in the country. The second phase of the Austin Community College Highland campus, built inside the former mall, just won a 2026 ULI Americas Award for Excellence from the Urban Land Institute.
The $153 million project converted the middle of the old mall into business incubators, a health sciences and STEM center, a multimedia art gallery, and a culinary arts program, all connected by a public walkway lined with art installations. It's a strong example of what adaptive reuse can do for a struggling retail property, and it's part of the broader story of how Austin neighborhoods keep evolving.
$295 Million Parks and Library Bond Headed to the November Ballot
Austin voters will decide this November on a $295 million bond package split between two propositions: $260 million for parks and recreation projects, and $35 million for upgrades to two Austin Public Library branches, including the Hampton Branch at Oak Hill and a future branch in Colony Park.
If both propositions pass, the city estimates it would add about $41.60 to the typical homeowner's annual property tax bill by 2033, once all the new debt is issued. Alamo Drafthouse Mueller Renamed the Matthew McConaughey Cinema
In a very Austin move, Alamo Drafthouse's Mueller location is being renamed the Matthew McConaughey Cinema today, honoring the Uvalde-born, Austin-based actor. The theater is hosting a private dedication ceremony tonight with a screening of McConaughey's new film, and there's a public cocktail party planned for August 16 if you want to be part of the celebration.

Texas Hill Country Named a Top Wine Region in the Country
The Texas Hill Country just jumped to No. 3 on USA Today's list of the best wine regions in the country, up from No. 9 last year. Austin Still a Top Draw for Movers, Especially Gen Z
According to U-Haul's latest Growth Index, Texas remains one of the top states in the country for attracting movers, and Austin ranks No. 6 nationally for Gen Z relocations specifically. New residents are most commonly coming from Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
This kind of sustained, younger population growth is one of the reasons demand has stayed relatively resilient in the Austin housing market, even as the broader market has cooled from its pandemic-era highs. UT Tower Restoration Hits the 40% Mark
The $77 million restoration of the UT Tower, underway since 2024, has now hit the 40% completion mark. The project is expected to wrap in spring 2028. It's one of those slow-moving Austin landmarks projects that's easy to forget about until you drive by campus and notice the scaffolding finally coming down in a few more years.
CapMetro Bikeshare Returns in Phases Starting August 11
CapMetro's Bikeshare service is coming back in phases starting August 11, months after a fire at the operations facility damaged the system's charging infrastructure. About a third of the fleet will be available in high-demand areas, including near UT, with full service expected to be restored by the end of 2026.
