What a Homestead Exemption Means in Texas

The Homestead Exemption reduces the taxable value of your primary residence, which lowers your annual property tax bill. In Travis and Williamson Counties, it applies only to your principal residence.

Key facts based on current law:

  • To qualify for the general residence homestead exemption, you must own your home and use it as your primary residence.

  • As of January 1 2022, new homebuyers can receive a prorated exemption in the same tax year they purchase the home. You no longer must own the home as of January 1 of that tax year.

  • However, for some specific exemptions (age 65 or older, disability, etc.) different rules may apply.

  • Though you can apply “anytime,” many appraisal districts still expect the form to be filed by April 30 of the tax year for full benefit that year.

  • You can apply the homestead exemption retroactively for up to two years.

  • *Pro Tip: Make sure you have changed your drivers license address - you can do this online quickly!

Once you have done this, when you get your tax bill reach out to see if you should protest the value of your home!
